Somerset County, Maryland--Taste the Salt of Centuries

The Somerset County Arts Council is located on Burton Avenue in Crisfield. Our exhibits include a variety of art styles, techniques and themes for folk arts to fine arts, including the Celtic, Native American and the African-American heritage of the County. We use the enormous amount of talent in the county, and the resources of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore which enable us to provide programs that are both educational and entertaining. We also produce many successful dinner theaters thus broadening our focus to include the performing arts. We developed an Arts in Public Places program and have a gift shop which features our members' works.

Our goals are to continue a level of development that provides exhibits that not only reflect the diverse cultures in the County, but also programs which will educate, inform, and relate events taking place throughout the County and State and make them available to our residents. These programs include exhibits which address social issues or unusual perspectives of the Eastern Shore. We sponsor readings, creative writing, workshops, children's activities, theater programs, bus trips to cultural events, special exhibits, a speaker's bureau for presentations to other organizations, grant writing workshops, and an Art library. We conduct fund raising activities for administrative functions of the council and the renovation of our building.

In addition, members of the Council supported many community projects including the Tangier Sound Country Music Festival, the National Hard Crab Derby, the Crisfield Seafood Workers Festival, Sunset on the Bay, the annual Somerset County Students Art Exhibit and Maryland "You Are Beautiful" Senior Art Competition. We actively work to assist organizations in providing a better quality of life for the citizens of Somerset County.
