SMITH ISLAND WATER TRAILS

Though best known as a watermens' community, Smith Island is also a paddler's paradise for day or overnight trips. The meandering creeks, or "guts" through the island's 8,000 acres of marsh provide extensive paddling opportunities close to three island villages where paddlers can feast on fresh crab cakes and the island's trademark nine layer cake.

Though there are currently no kayak/canoe rentals on the island, boats (your own or a rental) can be transported aboard the island freight boats for an additional cost. Be ready to load and unload your boat and transport it to the nearest available launch location. Maps of all Smith Island Trails are available on their website or you may order a water resistant copy from the site. It is recommended that you have some experience before attempting these trails.

JANES ISLAND STATE PARK WATER TRAILS
Crisfield, Maryland
With two distinct areas, Janes Island State Park has a developed mainland section with cabins and a portion accessible only by boat. The park's Chesapeake Bay location provides water activity opportunities; miles of isolated shorelines and marsh areas delight visitors who enjoy natural areas. Water trail maps for Janes Island State Water Park are available for purchase from the camp store in the Park.
